“Offensively we executed very well tonight and the stats reflect that,” said head coach Kym McKay. Monique Houston is continuing her solid play and Erin Frick had a great weekend.”

The Westerwinds (10-12, 7-3 The Summit League) began game one with an early eight-point run to go up 12-2 when the Jaguars (10-14, 3-7 Summit League) recorded four-straight errors. Western then held its lead and never let IUPUI get closer than five points the rest of the game.

The Westerwinds benefited from back to back errors by the Jaguars when IUPUI had a 35-34 lead. Western then ended the extra-point game on a kill by junior Monique Houston.

The third game was close until Frick broke a seven-all tie to put the Westerwinds ahead for good. Three points later Western started a five-point run to extend its lead to six points and did not allow IUPUI to get closer than five points the rest of the match.

The Westerwinds ended the match with a .302 (53k-15e126ta) hitting percentage, while holding the Jaguars to a .110 (48k31e-154ta) mark. Western also out-blocked IUPUI 10-6.

“We were successful this weekend because the players are accomplishing their goals and being accountable for their performance,” added McKay. “If we continue this trend we will sustain success.”

The match was part of the national Dig For the Cure event to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Western and IUPUI had a combined goal to raise $2,000 towards the national goal of $200,000.

“It was memorable match for us,” McKay said. “The dominate presence of pink on both
sides of the court was a constant reminder that the match served more
purpose than usual [pink shirts, headbands, socks, shoelaces].
I would like to thank everyone on campus who pledged funds, early totals
indicate the $2,000 goal was met.”

Canada's Sports Hall of Fame has recently welcomed eight new honoured members. All are worthy, of that there is no doubt. Included in the group are professional hockey, baseball and football players, who at one time were judged to be the most valuable performers in their leagues.

But in all the gushing over the brilliant athletic achievements of Mike Bossy, Larry Walker, Doug Flutie, Cassie Campbell and Daniel Igali, let's not forget to celebrate the significance of a triumph of the spirit which marked this year's induction ceremony at Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. If the most important thing that an elite athlete can possess is strength of character, then Vermilion, Alberta's Beckie Scott may be the greatest of them all.

TIM PEELER: B-Ballin' at the Old Barn A Hit for Men, Women

October 29, 2007 on 9:25 pm | In Athletics | No Comments

By now, everyone knows Brandon Costner has game. For a few fleeting moments Friday night, he had red hair too. Costner, wearing a red-and-white wig he borrowed from a member of the pep band, could not win the three-point shooting contest with partner Megan Zullo, but he definitely caught everyone's attention at the B-Ballin' at the old Barn, a practice and skills exhibition Friday night at historic Reynolds Coliseum. So did men's head coach Sidney Lowe and women's head coach Kay Yow, both looking energized for the coming season. Lowe, entering his second year at the school, appears more fit after his personal off-season conditioning program. Yow, who fought a public battle with cancer throughout last season, says she's looking forward to her 33rd season as the Wolfpack women's head coach.
