MACOMB, Ill. - Games one and two of the Purple and Gold World Series were split Sunday, at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.

Game 1
Jerry Prina registered the game winning RBI for the Gold team in the top of the seventh inning when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Dan Johnson for a 6-5 victory.

Both teams put runs on the board in the first inning leading to a 1-1 tie. The Gold team scored twice in the second inning off of RBI-singles from Prina and Jared Wolf. They got two more in the third with a Dan Johnson RBI-double, and Steve Strutz recorded an RBI on a fielder’s choice.

Mark Dibernardo started for the Gold team, striking out nine batters in 4.1 innings of work. He allowed two runs on just three hits for the afternoon.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Purple team got a two-run triple from T.J. Kistner. Kyle Surprenant followed up with a single to plate Kistner and bring the Purple team within one.

Zach Berg led off the bottom of the sixth for the Purple team with a solo home run to left field to tie the game up at five.

Todd Nelson worked into the seventh inning to pick up the win for the Gold team, while Ryan Schmidt got the final two outs for the save.

Game 2
The Purple squad got their revenge in the second game as they cruised to a 12-1 win.

Similar to the first game, both teams put runs on the board in the opening inning. The Purple team then put up four runs in the top half of the second. Surprenant scored what proved to be the game winning run, when he crossed the plate on an error off a fielder’s choice. Chris Waddell and Kistner followed up with RBI singles, and Tim Victor hit an RBI-double to plate the fourth run of the inning.

The fifth inning put the game out of reach for the Gold team, as the Purple squad plated five runs on three hits and an error. Tyler Metcalf had an RBI-single in the frame for the Purple team.

Eric Eden got the win going five innings, while allowing just one run on five hits and striking out two.

Stan Hyman Quotes
On pitching:
“Mark (Dibernardo) showed why he will go into the season as the ace of the staff,” said Stan Hyman of his senior right-hander. “Eric (Eden) showed us today why he will be a starter in the rotation, he threw incredibly well. Frank Zenisek and Justin Eissens looked like they will live up to their billing this year. Not only are they throwing hard, but they are consistently throwing strikes. I think pitching-wise, that is where we are going to get our leadership.”

On hitting:
“When you have leaders like Kyle Surprenant and Cooper Stewart coming back, you have a pretty good place to start. Our three biggest newcomers offensively would be Steve Strutz, Tyler Metcalf, and Lorenzo Gallaga, who could be our prototypical lead off hitter. There’s a lot of guys though who could make an impact, and we’re excited to see what they all can do.”

Game three of the Purple and Gold World Series will take place at 3 p.m. Friday, at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
