Gold team forces decisive World Series game on Sunday
October 12, 2007 on 1:50 am | In Athletics |MACOMB, Ill. - Jerry Prina’s two-out RBI infield single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Gold team to a dramatic come-from-behind, 8-7, win in Game Four of the Purple & Gold World Series.
With the victory, the Gold squad evened the best-of-five series at two games apiece, forcing a deciding Game Five, slated for a 1 p.m. start Sunday at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
The Gold squad rallied from an early 6-1 deficit and trailed 7-5 entering the crucial final frame. Senior catcher Cooper Stewart led off the seventh with a single and advanced to second when sophomore infielder Dan Johnson drew a walk. Following a deep fly ball to center off the bat of junior outfielder Kenny Price, Stewart advanced to third and scored on senior outfielder Steve Strutz sacrifice fly. First baseman James Bina followed with a walk, moving Johnson to second. Down to their last strike of the series, freshman third baseman A.J. Whitten singled through the hole at short to tie the game at 7-7. Prina, a senior second baseman, then plated Bina with the game winner.
Junior righty Grant Meyer picked up the win with a scoreless seventh. Junior hurler Nathan Johnson kept Gold in the game during the middle innings with three innings of three-hit, one-run relief.
The Purple team had jumped out to an early 6-1 lead behind two-run home runs from junior third baseman Tyler Metcalf and junior first baseman Cal Bassil. Junior outfielder Zach Berg added two RBI for the Purple team, which recorded nine hits on the day. Berg and senior designated hitter T.J. Kistner each added a triple.
The Gold squad, which tallied seven hits, was led by Prina (2-3) and senior outfielder Brett Pendell (2-2 with a walk). Junior outfielders Jared Wolf and Price each tripled. Stewart and Strutz each had two RBI, while Pendell, Johnson, Whitten, and Prina each drove in a run.
