Leathernecks take 5th place for second straight tournament
October 13, 2007 on 2:50 am | In Athletics |BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Western Illinois men’s golf team grabbed fifth place at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate at Illinois State.
Kyle Peterman (Sherman, Ill./Williamsville) paced the Leathernecks by shooting three straight rounds of 72 (216), to finish tied for 14th place. Peterman was seven shots off the pace of the University of Illinois’ Chris DeForest, who won the tournament with a 209 (73-73-63).
Three shots back of Peterman was Brian Scott (Hannibal, Mo./Hannibal) with a 219 (71-74-74), in a tie for 23rd. Western had two players that each finished play with scores of 222. Jared Steger (Bannockburn, Ill./Northern Illinois) and Jason Woll (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) tied for finishes in 33rd place. Woll fired a 70 in today’s final round, for a Leatherneck tournament low. Andrew Godfrey (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) rounded out the team scoring, as he finished tied for 48th with a 229 (74-78-77).
Competing independently was David Marshall (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) and Brian Sandovall (Geneseo, Ill./J.D. Darnall). Marshall completed play with a 225 (76-72-77), in a tie for 40th. Sandovall got a share of 54th place as he carded a 232 (81-73-78).
The University of Illinois took the team title as they combined for a 837 (290-275-272) over the 54-hole event.
Western Illinois is in competition in Macomb this Saturday. The Leathernecks welcome Summit League member IUPUI to the Harry Mussatto Golf Course, with play set to start at 8 a.m.
