Summit League unbeatens square off at MacKenzie Alumni Field

MACOMB, Ill.- Two undefeated teams in The Summit League play will battle each other when Western Illinois women’s soccer team hosts South Dakota State Thursday, Oct. 11, at 4 p.m.

The Westerwinds (9-1-1, 3-0-0 Summit League) enter the contest with the Jackrabbits (4-3-3, 3-0-1 Summit League) on an eight game unbeaten streak. Their last loss came Sept. 7 in a 3-0 loss at Evansville.

Thursday’s matchup features the Summit League’s top two teams. Western is first in the conference in goals per game (2.09) and goals against average (0.80). South Dakota State is right behind the Westerwinds in both categories, scoring 1.80 goals per game and allowing just 1.12 goals per game.

About South Dakota State
South Dakota State has collected its three league wins over Oakland (3-0), IPFW (4-0), and IUPUI (2-1). The Jackrabbits’ other win on the season came in a 2-0 decision over University of Mary (N.D.).

The South Dakota State offense is led by junior Kellyn Farrell who leads the team in assists (5) and points (11). She is tied for second on the team in goals with three on the season. Senior Kelsey Worcester leads the Jackrabbits in goals with four. She is second behind Farrell on the team in the points column with nine. Freshmen Kaitlin Justice and Tory Schiltgen both have seven points on the season. Justice has recorded three goals and one assist while Schiltgen has tallied two goals and three assists.

Junior Nicole Lograsso has spent the majority of the time in net for South Dakota State, allowing six goals in 555 minutes. Her 0.97 goals-against average is second in the conference trailing only Western Illinois sophomore Meghan Tyk (0.57).

Against the Jackrabbits
The last and only game between South Dakota State and the Westerwinds came in 2004 when the Jackrabbits beat Western Illinois 2-0.

Last Week Review
The Westerwinds beat Missouri State 1-0 in their only game last week. Junior Ashley Hoch (Brookfield, Wis./Central) scored the game-winning goal in the 13th minute of the game off of senior Liz Remes’ assist. Tyk (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) had five saves and recorded her sixth win and third shutout of the year.

On the NCAA Leaderboard
Western Illinois’ successful season has the team and its players showing up on the NCAA leaderboard. The most notable statistic is that the Westerwinds are tied for fifth in the nation in won-lost-tied percentage. Their 0.864 won-lost-tied percentage has them tied with Boston College and the number one team in the nation, Stanford.
Tyk appears on two leaderboards, as she is 27th in save percentage (0.871) and 29th in goals-against average (0.57).

Western Illinois also ranks in the top 100 in scoring offense (43rd), shutout percentage (60th), goals-against average (62nd), and save percentage (77th).
