Leathernecks take three singles and two doubles flights at Flyer
October 18, 2007 on 9:15 pm | In Athletics |MACOMB, Ill. The Western Illinois men’s tennis team finished the Flyer’s Fall Classic taking three singles and two doubles flights, Saturday.
Senior Martin Bostrm defeated the University of Chicago (UC), 6-2, 6-3, to advance and defeat Grand Valley State, 6-2, 6-3, and win the Flight A singles heat. Taking the Flight B singles heat was junior Sean Ragee-Nelson after defeating Chicago State, 6-3, 6-0, in the semifinals and UC by injury default in the finals match. In Flight D singles, senior Michael Tiu took the Leathernecks third singles heat after defeating Olivet Nazarene, 6-0, 6-1, then advancing to a victory over Chicago State, 6-4, 6-1.
“I’m proud of these guys,” said Western Illinois head coach Michael Hunt. “We played well for the most part. Martin was dominant and it was nice to see him play that well again. It was nice to see both of our seniors step up.”
In the doubles flights, duo Bostrm and freshman Francisco Ortiz won the Flight A heat after defeating Illinois-Chicago, 8-6. Winning the Flight C finals match was duo Tiu and junior Michael Schild over Olivet Nazarene, 8-0.
“This was a good tournament and we were fortunate to do this well,” said Hunt.
The men resume competition at the beginning of their Spring 2008 season with a dual match against Northwestern, Wednesday, January 16, in Evanston, Ill., at 7 p.m.
