Allen finishes in top 10, Westerwinds place sixth
October 28, 2007 on 8:26 pm | In Athletics |LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. - Junior Becky Allen finished in the top 10 and led the Western Illinois women’s golf team to a sixth place finish at the UMKC/Kenneth Smith Women’s Golf Classic presented by the Hampton Inn.
Allen tied for ninth place after shooting a 78 both rounds for a total of 156. Only four strokes behind Allen, Western’s Jennifer Holt shot a 77 and an 83 and tied for 17th place. Freshman Claire Gursh finished tied for 22nd place with a 162, freshman Lindsay Wandrey tied for 45th place with a 173 and freshman Elizabeth Fernandes rounded out the lineup with a 178.
Western Illinois’ Jenna Keane (37th place with a 169), Nerissa Hetzel (T-38th place with a 170) and Maggie Henke (49th place with a 174) played in the tournament as individuals.
The Westerwinds placed higher then the only other Summit League team, host UMKC, with a two-round total of 651. Northern Colorado took the tournament title with 609, while Eastern Illinois, South Dakota State, Drake and Creighton finished ahead of Western. Behind the Westerwinds in the 10-team field was Truman State, UMKC, Rockhurst and Missouri Western State.
The UMKC/Kennethy Smith Women’s Golf Classic concluded fall play for the Westerwinds, with competition picking back up in March at the Northern Illinois Snowbird tournament.
