Leathernecks host IUPUI in Summit League matchup
October 28, 2007 on 10:06 pm | In Athletics |MACOMB, Ill. Saturday marks the third Summit League match of the year for the Western Illinois men’s soccer team as they welcome in IUPUI to John MacKenzie Alumni Field at 1 p.m.
The Leathernecks (4-7-3/0-1-1) are coming off a weekend where they went 0-1-1. Western played UMKC to a scoreless tie Saturday, and lost to defending NAIA National Champion Graceland 1-0 Sunday. Junior goalkeeper Charlie Sales (Springfield, Ill./Lehigh) logged all minutes in net last weekend. Currently Sales is leading the Summit League in save percentage (.860) and goals against average (0.81).
IUPUI
The Jaguars (7-4-1/2-0-0) are sitting a half game back of Oakland in the Summit League standings. IUPUI has had a 14-day layoff from their last contest, a 4-1 victory over UMKC. In their only other league game, the Jaguars defeated Centenary 4-3.
Vangel Nacovski is leading the team in goals (4), assists (3) and scoring (11). Behind him is Louie Leger with three goals scored on the season. Leger was named Summit League Player of the Week with two game winning goals in their last two games.
Western trails the all-time series with IUPUI 4-6-1. The Jaguars were the only team in conference to defeat the Leathernecks last season (1-2). Western avenged that loss with a 1-0 victory in the semifinals of the Mid-Con Tournament.
Homestand
Saturday marks the second of three straight games at home for Western, and is the first of two Summit League matchups. The Leathernecks are looking to break into the win column in league play, while also searching for their first home win of the season.
Alumni Weekend
This weekend is Alumni Weekend for the Leathernecks. Following Saturday’s game, there will be an alumni game at John MacKenzie Alumni Field, slated to start at 4 p.m. There will also be a social at the Alumni House at 7 p.m.
