Westerwinds' 11-game unbeaten streak ends with 1-0 loss at Creighton
October 31, 2007 on 8:05 pm | In Athletics |OMAHA, Neb.- The Western Illinois women’s soccer team saw their 11-game unbeaten streak come to an end after a 1-0 loss to Creighton at Ellig Sports Complex.
“I thought it was a good weekend for us overall,” said Western Illinois head coach Tony Guinn. “It was a lot of traveling, but we got a conference win at North Dakota State and played well at Creighton.”
The Blue Jays (8-6-1) got on the board early in the third minute when Marcy Gans found the bottom right corner of the net from six yards out for her eighth goal of the season. Emily Orbell and Toch Ihemelu recorded assists on the play.
“It’s tough to have to play from behind for 86 minutes,” stated Guinn. “They had a tough defense and a very good goalkeeper and they never let us back in the game.”
The Westerwinds (12-2-1) had opportunities throughout the game to tie the match at one. With time winding down in the first period, junior Katelyn Wisner (Lenexa, Kan./Olathe East) got a foot on the ball inside the box, but Creighton keeper Kristen Casey made a diving save to keep the Western Illinois off the board.
Despite giving up the early goal, the Westerwinds remained strong the rest of the game, only allowing the Blue Jays four shots on goal after giving up the goal in the third minute. Sophomore Meghan Tyk (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) recorded four saves in her first loss of the season.
Western Illinois will host their final home game of the season Friday, October 26, at 4 p.m. when they face IUPUI at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
“It’s going to be good to be back at home,” Guinn said. “We’ve played well at home and it’ll be nice to be back in front of our home crowd for senior day.”
