TIM PEELER: Pack Helps Say Good-Bye to Orange Bowl
November 28, 2007 on 10:20 pm | In Athletics | No CommentsYou can't blame Tom O'Brien for not mustering up a little nostalgia for Orange Bowl Stadium. He's never won at the downtown Miami landmark as a player or a coach. He was a junior defensive end when Navy lost at Miami 30-10 in 1969. He never faced the Hurricanes in his 15 years as an assistant coach at Virginia, though Miami beat the Cavaliers 31-21 just weeks after O'Brien left Charlottesville to become head coach at Boston College. With the Eagles, O'Brien was a disappointing 0-8 against the Big East's southern-most foe, including five losses in the Orange Bowl. So forgive O'Brien if he doesn't get all warm-and-fuzzy thinking about the demise of the crumbling, 70-year-old downtown stadium when he takes NC State's football team (3-5 overall, 1-3 ACC) and its two-game winning streak there to face the Hurricanes at noon on Saturday, a game that will be carried live on the Wolfpack Radio Network and on ESPNU.

Yow Still Setting Examples With Her Fight
November 28, 2007 on 9:30 pm | In Athletics | No CommentsRALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -Kay Yow had just pulled in to pick up her dry cleaning and barely had a foot out of the car when she noticed a woman approaching with a smile. “I thought that was you,'' the woman said. “I just wanted to tell you I'm praying for you.'' The encounter was brief, yet it lingered with North Carolina State's Hall of Fame women's basketball coach - just like all the letters, cards and e-mails she has received from people moved by her fight with cancer. As she returns for her 33rd season with the Wolfpack while facing the progression of a cancer first diagnosed two decades ago, Yow feels compelled to keep fighting to set an example for her players and other cancer patients in desperate need of hope. She's cherishing every small blessing, from being able to lead a basic practice drill to having people she meets tell her how she has inspired them. “When they say that, it really gives me a lift because it's at that time I know for sure that I'm not going through it for nothing,'' Yow said. “That means a lot to me. I have to go through it. I accept that, and I'm not panicked about it because the Lord is in control. But it just would be so saddening if I had to go through it and I couldn't help people. “But then I see I'm helping others in a greater way than I ever have,'' she said, tears welling in her eyes. “That's the amazing thing, you know?'' Amazing would be a good word to describe Yow, a woman of unshakable faith and determination who refuses to dwell on an uncertain future even as her 65-year-old body betrays her. Her resume long ago established her as one of the sport's most successful coaches: 708 victories in 36 seasons; coaching the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in 1988; and earning four Atlantic Coast Conference championships, 20 NCAA tournament bids and a trip to the 1998 Final Four at N.C. State. She sounds determined

New Anti-Doping Code Approved
November 28, 2007 on 8:40 pm | In Sports | No CommentsPublished: Tue Nov 27, 2007 2:00 AM MST
The new World Anti-Doping Code was approved by the sports movement and governments of the world at the World Conference on Doping in Sport in Madrid (SPA) last week. The Foundation Board of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) unanimously ratified the revisions to enhance the Code on Saturday. During a full day of interventions on the Code by public authorities and the sports movement on Friday 16th November, the underlying position was clearly in support of the revisions to the document, whilst a number of valuable amendments were brought forward to the draft that has been through a 18-month consultation process since April 2006.
The revised Code strengthens the fight against doping and advances anti-doping harmonization and programs worldwide. Sports organizations and governments are required to implement the revisions to the Code by 1st January 2009.
We are very happy to have a new code reflecting our experiences since 2003. It is a great step forward in the global fight against doping in sport, commented FIS President Gian Franco Kasper, who was re-elected to the Executive Board of the WADA as the representative of the international sports federations.
We are also pleased that the revised code includes amended wording requiring the international federations to do everything possible to award events only to countries whose governments have adopted the UNESCO anti-doping convention and whose national bodies comply with the Code. Moreover, it is important that the new Code maintains the obligation on WADA to continue to conduct out-of-competition testing, rather than simply acting as a watch dog.
Australian John Fahey was elected new President of WADA while Arne Ljungqvist, a Swedish IOC member, was elected as its next vice president.
