Inaba
November 1, 2007 on 9:05 pm | In Athletics |FARGO, N.D.- Senior Misako Inaba scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to help the Western Illinois women’s soccer team defeat North Dakota State 2-1 and remain undefeated in Summit League play.
“This is another big win for us,” stated Western Illinois head coach Tony Guinn. “They are a tough team to play at home and any win on the road is huge. We’re very excited to win a big game they way we did with a golden goal in double overtime.”
In the 103rd minute of the game, Inaba (Kashiwa, Japan/Yachiyoshoin) received a pass from junior Ashley Hoch (Brookfield, Wis./Central) and broke down field. Inaba unloaded a shot from 25 yards out and past the out-stretched hand of North Dakota State (10-6-0, 2-3-0 Summit League) keeper Monica Morgan.
“I’ve been telling Misako all year that she needs to shoot more,” said Guinn. “She’s such an unselfish player that she is always looking to set others up for a goal. She could be wide open and still be looking to pass the ball. Defenses started to look off of her when she had the ball knowing that she is looking to pass. She promised me she would start to look for shots and it paid off in a big way today.”
The Bison scored the first goal of the game in the 47th minute when Abbey Stratton beat sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Tyk (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) on a penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead.
The Westerwinds tied the game in the 87th minute when junior Katelyn Wisner (Lenexa, Kan./Olathe East) found senior Bess Rapp (Lincoln, Neb./Southeast) open inside the box. Rapp took a shot that deflected off a North Dakota State defender’s head and into the net.
Tyk made four saves to pick up the win and improve her record 9-0-0 on the season. The Westerwinds defense helped Tyk only allowing five shots on goal.
Western Illinois’ victory broke the school record for wins in a season, previously held by the 2006 squad with 11.
“It means a lot to the players to break this record,” Guinn stated. “They’ve worked so hard and they deserve all the success that they’ve gotten this year.”
Western Illinois will travel to Creighton to play the Blue Jays Sunday, October 21, at 1 p.m. at Michael J. Morrison, S.J., Stadium.
