Cross country teams to host Summit League Championship

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois cross country teams will host the 2007 Summit League Cross Country Championship Saturday, Oct. 27, at Spring Lake Park.

Western Illinois, who is coming off a two-week layoff will look to improve on their sixth place finish by both the men’s and women’s teams a year ago.

The men’s team is lead by a pair of sophomores in Eric Anerino (Naperville, Ill./North) and Challas Ray (Toledo, Ill./Cumberland). Anerino posted the top time for Western this year, running an 8K time of 25:18 at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational. It was the 10th best 8K time in the conference this season. Ray has lead the Leathernecks in three of the five races and ran a personal best 25:34 in their last race at the Bradley Classic.

The women’s team is paced by senior Beth Whalen (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf), a 2006 all-conference first team member. Whalen has finished first on the team in every race this season. She broke the school’s record for a women’s 6K at the Bradley Classic with a time of 21:53, a time that places sixth in the conference. She has also posted the 10th best women’s 5K time, running a 18:18 at the Panther Invitational. Senior Chandel Ray (Toledo, Ill./Cumberland) has finished second on the team in four of the five races this year.

The men’s race will kick off the day at 10 a.m. with the women’s race following at 11 a.m. The awards ceremony will take place following the women’s race at noon. Parking is free and available on site.
