Leathernecks prepare for final home conference match

MACOMB, Ill. The Western Illinois men’s soccer team takes on Centenary at John MacKenzie Alumni field Saturday, October 27 at 1 p.m.

The Leathernecks (4-8-3, 0-2-1) had a chance last weekend to move up in the Summit League standings as they battled second-place IUPUI. Jonathan Sandoval (East Moline, Ill./United Township) registered his first career goal in the 2-1 loss at home. It was the sixth single goal loss on the season for Western. Junior goalkeeper Charlie Sales (Springfield, Ill./Lehigh) remained atop the goals against average (0.95) and save percentage (.840) categories in the league.

Centenary
The Gents (3-9-0, 2-2-0) are led by Aaron Volanski, who is averaging one goal per game in Summit League play. Last weekend, Centenary defeated Oral Roberts 1-0, to move into third place in conference. Mo Assi was named Summit League Defensive Player of the Week for his game winning goal in the contest. In league play, the Gents are giving up two goals per game. In their four conference matchups, they have posted 1-0 shutouts of IPFW and Oral Roberts. Centenary plays at Tulsa, Thursday evening.

Last season, Western defeated Centenary 3-0 in Shreveport, La., behind two assists from Martin Browne, Jr. (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) and one goal from Luke Greenwell (Quincy, Ill./Quincy). Saturday marks the eighth meeting all-time between the two schools, with Western holding a 7-0 advantage in the series.
