ST. LOUIS - Western Illinois University junior Herb Donaldson provided the initial spark and the final blow in the Leathernecks’ 27-14 win at Illinois State Saturday, and was rewarded for his 241-yard rushing day with the Gateway Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week Award, his second in the last three weeks.

Donaldson rushed 38 times for his second 200-yard game in three weeks, helping the Leathernecks to their third straight road victory in the process. The league’s leading rusher ran for 102 yards in the first quarter alone for his second 100-yard quarter of the season. Accounting for the first and last scores of the day, he broke away for a 55-yard touchdown on the Leathernecks’ first play from scrimmage, and put the game out of reach with a 32-yard scamper with 1:41 left in the game.

He averaged 6.3 yards per carry and his two touchdowns put him into third on Western’s career touchdowns list at 29. The Leathernecks are now 6-0 when Donaldson rushes for 100 yards.

Donaldson is now the nation’s fourth-ranked rusher, averaging 150.44 yards per game. Ahead of him are Yale’s Mike McLeod (182.43 ypg), Colgate’s Jordan Scott (171.88 ypg) and Georgia Southern quarterback Jayson Foster (161.0 ypg).
