McNamee and Toussaint Two-for-Two at Youth/Junior Biathlon Trials

December 31, 2007 on 9:26 pm | In Biathlon, Sports | No Comments

Published: Mon Dec 31, 2007 2:00 AM MST

Coleraine, MN, The two women form the Maine Winter Sports Center won the Youth and Junior categories. They were the only repeat winners today, as both Leif Nordgren (Marine-onSt. Croix, MN) in the Youth Men and Wynn Roberts (Battle Lake, MN) in the Junior Men were edged out of first place by small margins.

With their victories today, McNamee and Toussaint, along with Mark Johnson (Grand Rapids, MN) in the Junior Mens category have now locked up positions on the Junior World Championships squad. Roberts, Nordgren, and Laura Spector (Lenox, MA) pre-qualified for the Championships.

Meagan Toussaint had the best performance of the day in the Junior Womens 10K, with only two penalties, one in each of the two final standing stages. Her winning time of 38:52 put her 4:21 ahead of second place finisher, Brynden Manbeck (Grand Rapids, MN). Manbeck who is recovering from a hamstring injury had ten penalties. Third place went to Ellen Anderson (Grand Rapids, MN) with six penalties, 7:20 back.

Toussaints teammate, Hilary McNamee was equally convincing in her win over Addie Byrne (Bovey, MN) in the Youth Women 7.5K, scoring a 31:40 to 33:45 victory. McNamee had five penalties to Byrnes six. Third went to Grace Boutot (Fort Kent, ME) also with six penalties, 3:48 back, while Jessica Caron (Fort Kent, ME), with four penalties was a mere 10 seconds behind Boutot.

With familiar winners in the womens categories, different athletes from yesterday stood on top of the awards podium today in the two mens categories.

Mark Johnson who earned his fifth consecutive trip to the World Championships bested Wynn Roberts 39:04 to 39:14 today. Solid shooting fueled Johnsons victory, as he had only four penalties to Roberts seven. Coach Vladimir Cervenka commented, Yesterday was Marks first biathlon competition of the year. He is in college fulltime back east now. But he raced very smart today and was cautious on the shooting range. Three extra penalties pushed Roberts into second place, despite having a faster ski time than Johnson. Third today went to Newt Rogers (Fort Kent, ME), with eight penalties, 2:06 back, while Travis Mann-Gow (Burlington, VT), with five penalties was an additional 20 seconds behind Rogers.

After a disastrous day in the sprint competition yesterday, Ethan Dreissigacker who competes for the Ethan Allen Biathlon Club in Jericho, VT, won the Youth Mens 10K today. Dreissigacker yesterday cross-fired and missed some penalty loops resulting in six minutes of time added to his finish, pushing him down to 14th place. He made up for that today with only three penalties to gain an 18-second margin of victory over Leif Nordgren. Nordgren, battling flu symptoms all week, had seven penalties. Third and fourth places went to Preston Butler and Raleigh Goessling (Duluth, MN), each with nine penalties, 2:25, and 2:34 back, respectively.

Although there were some changes at the top of the results list today, Coach Cervenka was again pleased with the performances in general. Today was a little bit harder than yesterday for some athletes. The wind was shifting on the shooting range and some athletes had problems adjusting. Still, Meagan, Ethan, Hilary, and Mark all had good performances in these conditions.

Derek Thomas is 0-9 against the Jaguars, who won both meeting against the Leathernecks last season.

Last Time Out
A solid team effort and strong free throw shooting in the second half led to a 71-69 road win for the Leathernecks at Texas-Pan American Monday night. The win gave Western a split on its two-game Texas road trip after it fell to UT-Arlington, 80-57, two days earlier.
The Leathernecks shot 50 percent from the field and 90 percent from the line in the second half, as three players ended in double-figures. David Jackson scored a team-high 22, followed by a career-high 15 points from Josh Rivers and 12 by Jerryck Owens-Murrey.
UTPA led by as many as 13 in the second half, and by 11 with six minutes to play, but Western used a 15-3 run to take its first lead of the half at the 1:26 mark. The Leathernecks were sent to the line six times after that and hit all six attempts.

Jackson Notches Second 20-Point Outing
Senior David Jackson has notched 20-point games in two of his last three outings, scored a season-high 28 points against UT-Pan American in Macomb and recording 22 points against the same team on the road.

Starting Lineup Sees First Changes of Season
The starting lineup saw its first new look of the season at Texas-Pan American as Jerryck Owens-Murrey and Louis Johnson earned their first starts of the season. Owens-Murrey, coming off a career-high 10-rebound game, provided five rebounds and 12 points, while Johnson contributed two points and a pair of rebounds.

Owens-Murrey Improves Scoring, Rebounding
Jerryck Owens-Murrey averaged 9.5 points and 7.5 rebounds during the two-game Texas road swing, improving his season averages to 8.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. After his career-high 10 rebounds at UT-Arlington he was rewarded with a spot in the starting lineup. He responded with a 12-point, 5-rebound outing and helped the Leathernecks to a road victory at UT-Pan American.

Late Free Throws Help at UTPA
The Leathernecks hit 17 of their 19 second-half free throws in their 71-69 victory at UT-Pan American, converting their last 16 attempts. They were sent to the line six times in the final 1:26, helping fend off a potential UTPA comeback.
David Jackson was 5-of-5 in the second half while Nikola Bodic was 4-of-4. Both James Washington and Louis Johnson were 2-of-2.

Rivers Converts Five Threes at UTPA
Josh Rivers recorded a career-high 15 points at UTPA, thanks to 5-of-8 shooting from behind the arc. He was 3-of-5 from long range in the first half and 2-of-3 in the second. His final three-pointer of the night sparked a 15-3 run that erased an 11-point deficit and gave the Leathernecks a one-point lead with 1:26 to play.

DuBois Ranks Third in Rebounding
David DuBois’ team-high rebounding average of 7.1 per game currently ranks third in The Summit League, behind Oakland’s Derick Nelson (8.7 rpg) and North Dakota State’s Brett Winkelman (8.5 rpg).

TIM PEELER: Kay Yow's World of Silver Linings

December 30, 2007 on 8:20 pm | In Athletics | No Comments

Few people in the world of college athletics have been surrounded by darker clouds than NC State women's basketball coach Kay Yow over the last three years. But the irrepressible Yow, diagnosed a little over a year ago with Stage IV breast cancer, has yet to see the rumbling gray skies. She's too busy enjoying the shiny silver linings. It's a lesson Yow learned from her mother, Lib, who never stopped looking for a bright tomorrow, even as she ultimately lost her battle in the spring of 1993, not long after Yow's friend and fellow NC State basketball coach Jim Valvano also died of the disease in the same hospital.

EDINBURG, Texas David Jackson scored 22 points, as Western Illinois defeated Texas-Pan American 71-69.

Jackson’s jumper with 1:26 remaining gave the Leathernecks (3-5) the lead at 65-64. The Broncs (5-4) put Western to the free throw line six times the rest of the way, as Western converted all of those free throws to propel it to a 71-69 victory on the road.

“I have not seen a better second half than what I saw tonight, from a total team effort,” stated Western Illinois head coach Derek Thomas. “We had a little pow-wow the other night after the game. For these guys to be mature enough to talk about the things that we need to do and to realize what needs to happen really says a lot about them. That was an outstanding second half.” Continue reading Jackson lifts Western to 71-69 victory on the road…
