Baseball names Bainter to coaching staff
December 5, 2007 on 9:00 pm | In Athletics |MACOMB,Ill. Head coach Stan Hyman has announced the hiring of Brock Bainter to the Western Illinois University baseball coaching staff. Bainter will serve as hitting instructor and outfield coach. In addition he will have responsibility in the coaches box on game day.
“I’ve admired Brock’s work as a coach for several years,” Coach Hyman noted. “Just like players, sometimes you recruit coaches. In the process, you evaluate and assess whether the individual can help take the team to the next level. In Brock’s case, it’s evident he brings valuable qualities and experience which will help us reach our goal of winning a championship.”
Bainter, who is a graduate of Western Illinois and also attended Parkland College, served as assistant baseball coach at Macomb High School (2002-07) and as head coach of the Macomb American Legion team (2002-present). In addition, he was assistant boys basketball coach (2002-07) at Macomb High and head coach of the sophomore squad (2002-07). Bainter was an outstanding baseball and basketball player at Macomb High (1996-99).
“Coach Hyman and his staff have done a great job with the Western baseball program over the past few years,” said Bainter. “I am looking forward to becoming a member of the staff and helping with their continued success. Coaching at the Division-I level has always been a goal of mine, and I am looking forward to the challenges and experiences that lie ahead.”
As a player, Bainter still holds the single season record for doubles (18) at Macomb High School. He also was the starting third baseman on the Macomb High baseball team which captured Olympic Conference and regional championship titles in 1997.
As a coach, he guided the Macomb Legion team to four consecutive 20-win seasons. From 2003-6, Bainter led the team to the district championship game. Current Leatherneck players Brett Pendell, Ryley Smith, and Russell Orrill all played under Bainter on those legion teams.
“We’ve had several qualified coaches during my years at Western from San Diego to Boston to Philadelphia,” Hyman added. “It’s rare to find a coach of the same caliber right under your nose in your own community. But our players will tell you that Brock is as knowledgeable and as hard-working as anyone who has coached in our program.”
“Brock and I want to thank Dave Bartlett (Macomb High athletics director), Dana Isaacson (Macomb Jr. High principal), and Dr. Reuschel (superintendent) for their support in allowing Brock to coach at Western,” Hyman added. “All of them care greatly about our entire community…a real cooperation between Macomb and Western.”
“It’s great to see Stan reach out to the local community to find a top caliber coach,” said Dr. Tim Van Alstine, Western Illinois athletics director. “Brock is very respected both in baseball circles and in the community.”
