Westerwinds place seven on all-conference teams
December 7, 2007 on 9:20 pm | In Athletics |ELMHURST, Ill.- After winning The Summit League regular season championship with a perfect 8-0-0 record, the Western Illinois women’s soccer team placed seven players on all-conference teams and first-year head coach Tony Guinn was named Summit League Coach of the Year.
Guinn collects Coach of the Year honors after leading the Westerwinds to a perfect 8-0-0 league record and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. Western Illinois had an overall record of 15-2-1, which set a school record for wins in a season.
The Westerwinds placed four members on The Summit League All-Conference First Team. Junior midfielder Ashley Hoch (Brookfield, Wis./Central) earns her second all-conference selection first-team selection and her third all-conference selection overall after recording five goals and five assists this season.
Senior midfielder Misako Inaba (Kashiwa, Japan/Yachiyoshoin) was also selected to the all-conference first team after recording four goals and four assists. The selection is Inaba’s second straight first-team selection.
Juniors forward Katelyn Wisner (Lenexa, Kan./Olathe East) and defender Kim Schuneman (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) round out Western’s first team selections. Wisner (6 goals, 2 assists) was named the second team in 2005 while Schuneman (1 goal, 1 assist) picks up her first all-conference selection.
Senior forward Robyn Ruypers was named The Summit League All-Conference Second Team after recording three goals and six assists this season. Ruypers broke the Western’s career goals and points records this season.
Junior defender Lainey Bruhn (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley West) and sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Tyk (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) were also named the second team and earn their first all-conference selection. Bruhn anchored the Westerwinds’ defense, along with Schuneman, and picked up an assist on the season.
Tyk had a record of 11-1-0 and lead the league in goals-against average (0.47) and is second in save percentage (.891). She was seventh in the nation in both categories. Tyk also recorded five shutouts on the season.
Freshman forward/midfielder Kelsey Pillsbury (Chatham, Ill./Glenwood) was named to The Summit League All-Newcomer Team. Pillsbury recorded two goals and an assist this season, ranking her seventh in points among the team.
The Westerwinds will face Oral Roberts, Friday, November 9, at 12 p.m., in the first-round of The Summit League Championship at OU Soccer Field on the campus of Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.
