Western Illinois swimming and diving take first Summit League victory of season
December 10, 2007 on 9:50 pm | In Athletics |CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Western Illinois swimming and diving team started the night sweeping both the men’s and women’s 200-yard medley relays to take the first conference victories of the season from Summit League rival Eastern Illinois.
The Westerwinds took a 153-90 win over the Panthers, while the Leathernecks won 130-109. After Western swept the opening relays, Lauren Trondle and Zack Johnson each took a first-place victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle event.
Kaley Rowe and Jeff Davis each took first place in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle events, with Davis setting a new Western Illinois season-best time of 1:46.11 in the 200. Freshman Mike Regan managed to shave a few seconds off the Western Illinois season-best time in the 200-yard IM when he finished in first place with a new season-best time of 2:02.82.
Taylor Martin recorded a season-best time of 59.23 in the 100-yard butterfly event for another Westerwinds’ first-place finish. Other swimmers that tallied a first-place finish included Jennifer Madgiak, Darius Wolny, Shannon Nelson and Gregory Thede,
In addition to the swimming events, Western Illinois swept the diving events with freshman Molly Carrignan and junior Eric Campbell taking first place on both boards. Carrignan took first on the 1-meter with a score of 187.90 and on the 3-meter she scored 196.35. Campbell scored a 276.45 on the 3-meter and a 272.45 in the 1-meter diving event.
The Western Illinois swimming and diving squads will continue their season on the road as they travel to Valparaiso, Ind., Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. for another Summit League meet.
