Indoor track and field kicks off at the EIU Early Bird Open

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois track and field teams will kick off their indoor season at the EIU Early Bird Invitational, Saturday, Dec. 8, held in the Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse.

Field events will begin the day at 10:30 a.m. with the men’s weight throw. The final field event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. with the women’s and men’s high jump. Running events begin at noon with the men’s 60 meter prelims. The day concludes with the men’s and women’s 4X400 relays starting at 4:30 p.m. Admission to the meet is free to the public.

This Year’s Event
The event will be scored as a dual meet with athletes from Butler, Indiana State, St. Xavier University, Vincennes University and Western Illinois schedule to compete against Eastern Illinois.

Last Year’s Results

Both men’s and women’s teams had a record of 1-2 in the dual meets against Eastern Illinois, Indiana State, and Loyola. Both teams earned their lone victories over Loyola. The Panthers’ men’s squad went 3-0 to capture the men’s title and the Sycamores’ women’s team posted a 3-0 record to win the women’s team title.

The Leathernecks received a first place finish from Sean Delahunt (Pekin, Ill./Community) in the men’s shot put with a throw of 17.96m. Delahunt followed that up with a second-place showing in the weight throw with a throw of 17.08m. Blair Hadnott (Aurora, Ill./West) recorded a second place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 13.94m. Hadnott also placed third in the long jump after he jumped 6.86m.

The Westerwinds received first place finishes from Ashley Yancy (Streator, Ill./Streator) and Amy Zaffino (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka). Yancy finished first in the women’s triple jump after posting a score of 12.03m. She also placed fourth in the 60m dash with a time of 8.06. Zaffino brought home first in the weight throw with a throw of 16.62m. She also placed fifth in the shot put. Western Illinois got second place finishes from Nikki Klier (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) in the 400m dash, Beth Whalen (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) in the mile, and Faith Chew (Rockford, Ill./Christian Life).
