Indoor track and field teams finishes 1-2 at EIU Early Bird Open

CHARLESTON, Ill.- The men’s and women’s indoor track teams each finished 1-2 at the EIU Early Bird Open held in Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse on the campus of Eastern Illinois.

Each team picked up their lone win against Butler. Indiana State took home the men’s and women’s titles with 3-0 records.

The Leathernecks were led by senior Sean Delahunt (Pekin, Ill./Community) who finished first in the shot put with a throw of 17.49 m (57’04.75”), over three meters further than the second-place finisher. Delahunt also finished second in the weight throw (16.99m/55;09.00”).

Senior Walt Willis (Loda, Ill./Paxton-Buckley-Loda) recorded a third-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 13.80 m (45’03.50”) and fourth in the weight throw (16.30m/53;05.75). Sophomore Brian Pinta (Wheaton, Ill./North) finished fourth in the long jump with a jump of 6.40 m (21’00.00”). Western Illinois received fifth-place finishes from junior Kyle Austin (Cullem, Ill./Tri-Point) in the 200-meter dash, junior Torinn Pope (Steger, Ill./Rich South) in the 600-meter dash, and sophomore Derek Gibb (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington) in the 3000-meter run.

The Westerwinds were paced by sophomore Nikki Klier (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) who finished first place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.34 seconds and third in the 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 26.59 seconds.

Western Illinois received fourth-place finishes from sophomore Katie Jay (Ottumwa, Iowa/Ottumwa) in the 600-meter dash, senior Amy Zaffino (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) in the weight throw and shot put, freshman Nichole Manning (Kansas City, Mo./Winnetonka) in the pole vault, and senior Chelsea Gunder (Justice, Ill./Oak Park River Forest).

Western is off for the holiday season, returning to action Saturday, January 12, when they travel to West Lafayette, Ind. to take part in the Purdue Open.
