Student sports broadcaster earns regional award
January 10, 2008 on 10:10 pm | In Athletics |MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois University senior broadcasting major and journalism minor Kyle Dierking (Chatham, Ill.) was one of six broadcasting students to earn first place honors recently at the National Broadcasting Society (NBS) Region 5 Meeting and competition in Des Moines, Iowa.
Dierking won the video sports program competition with “Pigskin
Preview”, a weekly magazine show with head football coach Don Patterson, and also won best video sports package with “Women’s Basketball.” At the
Spring 2007 SINBA competition, Dierking took top honors in television
sports reporting. He also earned Spring 2007 broadcasting department
awards for best sports package, best video color announcer and was a
member of the best television newscast team.
“Kyle has been a true asset to all the efforts of increasing exposure for not only our university but for the men’s and women’s sports programs in particular,” said Jason Kaufman, Assistant Athletics Director for Media Services and Broadcasting. “He has continued what has been a long line of quality talent both on the radio and on television, and has helped both the broadcasting department and the athletics department cover a wide variety of Leathernecks and Westerwinds athletics.”
As a regional winner, Dierking’s video packages have been automatically entered into the 2008 national competition.
The National Broadcasting Society Region 5 includes colleges and
universities in the followings states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas,
Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and
Wisconsin. Approximately 20 universities submitted entries to the
regional competition.
The Western Illinois University Department of Broadcasting is an affiliate of the Western Sports Network and covers a majority of Western’s 20 Division I sports programs on radio and television.
