MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois University senior linebacker Travis Cherry (Carol Stream, Ill.) was one of 51 student-athletes from across the country named to the 10th annual Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team, announced recently in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Cherry, who carries a 3.533 grade point average, is expected to receive another year of athletic eligibility and graduate with a degree in kinesiology in 2008.

“Travis is a great example of someone who places just as high of a priority on his academics as he does his on-field performance,” said Western Illinois head coach Don Patterson. “It’s wonderful to see his hard work pay off both academically and athletically.”

Cherry ranked 15th in the Gateway Football Conference in tackles and ranked among the top-10 players in the league in sacks, tackles for loss and passes defended. He is a three-time member of the Gateway’s Academic Honor Roll and has twice been named to the league’s academic all-conference team.

Nominees are accepted from all NCAA Division I FCS institutions. Each nominee is required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. He must have reached his second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. He must also have participated in 50 percent of the games played at his designated position.

A special review committee comprised of FCS athletics directors was responsible for selecting the team. Completing this task were Peter Fields, Montana State; Marilyn McNeil, Monmouth; Jim Murphy, Davidson (chair); Ron Strollo, Youngstown State; and Donny White, Virginia Military Institute.
