Cherry awarded sixth year of eligibility by NCAA
February 7, 2008 on 8:00 pm | In Athletics |MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois University senior linebacker Travis Cherry (Carol Stream, Ill.) has been awarded a sixth year of athletic eligibility by the NCAA.
The NCAA last week ruled to approve the waiver to extend Cherry’s eligibility because of medical problems which forced him to miss two football seasons.
After redshirtting as a true freshman in 2003, Cherry was a starting linebacker in 2004 and 2005, registering 106 tackles during the two-year span. Three games into his junior season, he was again forced to the sidelines due to an injury suffered against Morehead State. Cherry returned to the starting lineup in 2007 and earned honorable mention status on the Gateway All-Conference Team. He has registered 194 tackles during his career, including 15 tackles for loss and seven sacks.
Cherry will be one of nine returning defensive starters and one of 10 returning all-conference honorees in 2008. The Leathernecks expect to return 20 starters (9 offense, 9 defense, 2 special teams) and 45 letterwinners next fall, including four all-Americans.
