Track and field posts five first-place finishes at Purdue Invitational
February 14, 2008 on 9:15 pm | In Athletics |WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- The Western Illinois men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams posted five first-place finishes at the Purdue Invitational held in the Lambert Fieldhouse.
“I thought it was a very successful first meet after such a long break,” stated Western Illinois head coach Mike Stevenson. “We had a lot of good individual performances.”
Two of the five first-place finishes came from freshman ChrisDell Harris (Wichita, Kan./West/Barton County CC). Harris placed first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.69 and 200-meter dash, crossing the tape with a time of 26.04. She also finished third I the long jump, posting a jump of 17’08.00”.
“This being ChrisDell’s first meet really shows what kind of an athlete she is,” said Stevenson. “She has had limited work out time with us so hopefully there is better things yet to come.”
Senior Heather Wetzel (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) finished first in the 600-meter run after recording a time of 1:37.30, four seconds ahead of second-place finisher Shannon Lane from DePaul.
The men’s team received first-place finishes from junior Kyle Austin (Cullom, Ill./Tri-Point) and Eric Anerino (Naperville, Ill./North).
Austin recorded his first-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.78. Anerino placed first in the 3,000-meter run after finishing over six seconds ahead of Purdue’s Matt DeSilva with a time of 8:48.48.
“We still need to be more fundamentally sound in some of the field events and better conditioned in the running events,” Stevenson stated. “We’ll work on that and it’ll come as the year goes on.”
Western’s indoor track and field teams will head to the Iowa City, Iowa, Saturday, January 19, to take part in the Iowa Open.
