Indoor track and field has strong showing at Iowa Open
February 23, 2008 on 9:55 pm | In Athletics |IOWA CITY, Iowa- The Western Illinois men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams posted two first-place finishes and six second-place finishes at the Iowa Open held at the University of Iowa’s Recreational Building.
Both first-place finishes came from the women’s team as freshman ChrisDell Harris (Wichita, Kan./West/Barton County CC) and senior Amy Zaffino (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) both lead their respective events. Harris took first in the 60-meter dash for the second week in a row after posting a time of 7.69, the same time she posted in winning the 60-meter dash at last weekend’s Purdue Open. The junior college transfer followed up her first-place showing by taking second in the 200-meter dash with a time 25.65.
Zaffino took first in the weight throw with a mark of 53-10.25(16.41m). Zaffino also took sixth in the shot put with a throw of 38-05.50(11.72m).
Other second-place finishes from the Westerwinds included sophomore Nikki Klier (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) in the 400-meter dash, senior Chandel Ray (Toledo, Ill./Cumberland) in the 3,000-meter run, and freshman Nichole Manning (Kansas City, Mo./Winnetonka) in the pole vault. Manning set a personal best with a mark of 11-03.75(3.45m).
The men’s team was lead by senior Sean Delahunt (Pekin, Ill./Pekin Community). Delahunt finished second in the weight throw with a throw of 53-01.75(16.20m) and took third-place in the shot put with a score of 56-00.00(17.07m).
Sophomore Eric Anerino (Naperville, Ill./North) took second in the mile run after posting a time of 4:23.01. Junior Kyle Austin also finished second in the 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 22.63.
Western Illinois will head to Madison, Wis., Saturday, January 26, to compete in the University of Wisconsin’s Elite Invitational.
