Holzhauer and Rowe win first, Western Illinois falls to Big Ten Iowa
February 24, 2008 on 10:05 pm | In Athletics |IOWA CITY, Iowa - Freshman Kaley Rowe and junior Anthony Holzhauer each earned individual wins as Western Illinois fell to Big Ten Iowa, Friday.
Although Rowe had two victories and others walked away with season-best times, the Westerwinds fell to the Hawkeyes 144-71, while the Leathernecks lost to the Big Ten team 159-63.
Rowe won first place in the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 1:55.00. In the 50-yard freestyle event, Amanda Smith finished in second with a new season-best time of 25.07. Teammate Taylor Martin added some more points to the Westerwinds’ score touching the wall at 25.28 and taking third place in the event.
Martin went on to take third place in the 50-yard butterfly event with a time of 26.97, while Rowe had her second, first-place finish of the night in the 100-yard freestyle event. Rowe’s time of 53.94 defeated three Hawkeyes in the event. Amber Piercy knocked nearly 10 seconds off her 500-yard freestyle time, which landed her a third-place time of 5:15.89.
On the men’s side, Eric Campbell took second place of five in 1-meter diving, surpassing his previous score of 296.45 with a season-best score of 313.57.
Jeff Davis landed a third-place finish out of eight swimmers in the 500-yard freestyle event. He improved his season-best time from a 4:54.89 to a 4:50.45. In the following event, the 50-yard breaststroke, Gregory Thede took second place with a time of 28.03, behind Iowa’s Sean Hagan who took first with a 27.33.
Diver Holzhauer wrapped up the meet on a high note for the men’s team, taking first place in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 295.80. He scored higher then Iowa’s Michael Gilligan, Frank Van Dijkhuizen and Drew DeLashmutt, along with teammate Campbell who took fourth place.
The Western Illinois swimming and diving team will return home for competition with UW-Green Bay, Friday, January 25 at 5 p.m. in Brophy Pool.
