Indoor track and field season continues at Elite Invitational

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams will head to the University of Wisconsin to take part in the Elite Invitational, Jan. 25-26.

This Year’s Invitational
The meet will be held in the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center, also known as The Shell, which is located next to Camp Randall Stadium. Admission to the meet is free to the public.

The men’s individual heptathlon and the women’s pentathlon will be held on Friday, Jan. 25, beginning at 1:45 p.m. Saturday will start with day two of the men’s heptathlon at 9:30 a.m. Field events are scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, with the running events kicking off at 12:30 p.m.

Other teams participating in The Elite Invitational are Minnesota State, Mankato, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Wisconsin, UW-Milwaukee, and Illinois-Chicago.

Iowa Open Results
Western Illinois tallied a total of two first-place finishes and six second-place finishes at the Iowa Open. The two first place finishes came from the women’s team as freshman ChrisDell Harris and senior Amy Zaffino brought home first-place in the 60-meter dash and the weight throw, respectively. Harris also recorded one of the six second-place finishes in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.65.

Other second-place finishes came for the Westerwinds came from sophomore Nikki Klier in the 400-meter dash, senior Chandel Ray in the 3,000-meter run, and freshman Nichole Manning in the pole vault.

The men’s team brought home second-place finishes from senior Sean Delahunt (weight throw), sophomore Eric Anerino (mile run), and junior Kyle Austin (200-meter dash). Delahunt followed his second-place showing by recording a third-place finish in the shot put.

Around the Conference
Four Western Illinois athletes currently hold top performances in their respective events in The Summit League. Austin holds the top 200-meter dash with his time of 22.63 at the Iowa Open. Delahunt’s shot put throw of 17.49m at EIU Early Bird is also the top Summit League performance.

On the women’s side, Zaffino’s performance in the weight throw at the Iowa Open of 16.41m and Klier’s time of 58.34 in the 400-meter dash at the EIU Early Bird are top times in the Summit League.
