Swimming & Diving Falls Short Against Clemson

The NC State men and women's swimming and diving teams both dropped decisions to Clemson at Casey Natatorium on Saturday, Jan. 19. The men (4-2, 1-2 ACC) fell to the Tigers 165-133, while the women (3-4, 0-3 ACC) came up short 171-129. The men's squad offered a solid showing with Stephen Mellor taking three events, while Andrew Lester grabbed two. Mellor collected the 100-back (50.36), 200-back (1:47.57) and 200-IM (1:51.89), while Lester owned the 1000-free (9:23.90) and 500-free (4:31.78). Mason McGee took first in the 200-free with a 1:40.60, and Dan Forsythe won the 200-breast on a 2:04.95. Forsythe also finished second in the 100-breast (57.03).

No. 20 M. Tennis Cruises Past Davidson, 7-0

No. 20 NC State cruised past Davidson with a 7-0 win Saturday afternoon in the second match of a triple header. NC State grabbed the doubles point for the second time in as many matches, and didn't drop a set in singles, allowing more than four games in a set only twice in 12 frames.

No. 20 M. Tennis Drops UNCG, 7-0

No. 20 NC State (3-0) swept the doubles point from UNC Greensboro (0-1) and kept rolling through singles with six straight wins to finish off a triple header with a 7-0 win. The Wolfpack rolled through the Spartans, allowing just 17 games in 12 sets of singles play.

M. Track & Field at Clemson, UNC

NC State men's track and field finished competition at two sites on Saturday. At Clemson, the men finished ninth and were led by a pair of top-6 finishes by Reggie Reese. At North Carolina, Jason Jones won the shot put with a 54'04.00″ and was sixth in the weight throw with a 52'00.50″.

Grant's game-winner Lifts Pack to 79-77 Upset in OT

Gavin Grant's backcourt steal and layup with 2.1 seconds remaining in overtime gave NC State a 79-77 victory over No. 21 Miami Saturday night at the RBC Center. Gant, who scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half, had just missed a drive to the basket with the Wolfpack trailing by two points. But freshman teammate J.J. Hickson was there for the put back with 3.9 seconds to play. Then, Miami's Anthony King tried to inbound the ball to teammate Jack McClinton, but threw it right to Grant instead. Grant, already a veteran of making last-second baskets to lead the team to wins over Villanova and Davidson, took the ball right over the top of King for the game-winning basket.

Holzhauer and Rowe win first, Western Illinois falls to Big Ten Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Freshman Kaley Rowe and junior Anthony Holzhauer each earned individual wins as Western Illinois fell to Big Ten Iowa, Friday.

Although Rowe had two victories and others walked away with season-best times, the Westerwinds fell to the Hawkeyes 144-71, while the Leathernecks lost to the Big Ten team 159-63.

Rowe won first place in the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 1:55.00. In the 50-yard freestyle event, Amanda Smith finished in second with a new season-best time of 25.07. Teammate Taylor Martin added some more points to the Westerwinds’ score touching the wall at 25.28 and taking third place in the event. Westerwinds down Oral Roberts 60-46

TULSA, Okla. Senior Gina Hugelier tallied a team-high 19 points and added 10 rebounds in the Western Illinois women’s basketball team’s 60-46 victory over Oral Roberts at the Mabee Center.

The Westerwinds (8-9, 6-0 The Summit League) opened the first half with strong defense forcing the Golden Eagles (10-7, 4-2 The Summit League) into a shot-clock violation on their first possession and held them scoreless until 18:10 remaining in the opening period. Western then opened up a 7-4 lead with just under 17 minutes remaining before Oral Roberts was able to get its first advantage of the game (11-10) with 15:04 left. Westerwinds drop season opener to DePaul 7-0

CHICAGO- The Western Illinois women’s tennis team fell in their season opener to DePaul by a score of 7-0.

“I thought we competed expceptionally well for the first match of the season,” stated Western Illinois head coach Michael Hunt. “DePaul is very talented and will be nationally ranked before the season is over.”

Freshman Kate Kennedy (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) appeared in her first collegiate match and battled in the opening set at No. 4 singles before dropping the match 6-3, 6-1. Indoor track and field has strong showing at Iowa Open

IOWA CITY, Iowa- The Western Illinois men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams posted two first-place finishes and six second-place finishes at the Iowa Open held at the University of Iowa’s Recreational Building.

Both first-place finishes came from the women’s team as freshman ChrisDell Harris (Wichita, Kan./West/Barton County CC) and senior Amy Zaffino (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) both lead their respective events. Harris took first in the 60-meter dash for the second week in a row after posting a time of 7.69, the same time she posted in winning the 60-meter dash at last weekend’s Purdue Open. Owens-Murrey records double-double, Leathernecks fall 76-55 at ORU

TULSA, Okla. Jerryck Owens-Murrey recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds but the Leathernecks dropped their second-straight on the road, 76-55 at Oral Roberts.

The Golden Eagles (12-5, 7-0 Summit) opened up the game with an 8-0 run, silenced by a pair of Jerryck Owens-Murrey free throws. The first field-goal for the Leathernecks (8-10, 3-4 Summit) did not come until the 16:09 mark of the first half, courtesy of a Chris Gonzalez tip-in. After a pair of ORU baskets, David DuBois connected on a three-pointer for Western to cut the lead to 13-7. David Jackson followed up the next Golden Eagle bucket with a pair of free throws that brought the Leathernecks within five at 15-10, but it was as close as they would get the rest of the half.
