Indoor track and field heads to UNI Invitational

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams continue the season as it heads to the UNI Invitational, Saturday, February 2.

This Year’s Invitational

Events are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. on Saturday with men’s shot put and long jump beginning the day’s events. Other teams competing are Northern Iowa, St. Cloud State, Drake, St. Louis, Truman State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Central Missouri, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Cloud County Community College, and Iowa Central. Bradley will also be competing on the women’s side. All events are located at the UNI Dome.

Last Year’s Results

In last year’s Invitational, then-sophomore Faith Chew took the lone first-place finish as she won the pole vault with a vault of 11-01.75 (3.40m).

The women’s team had a strong showing in the 400-meter dash, as then-freshman Nikki Klier took second with a time of 58.86. Teammate Katie Jay finished fifth in the same event with a time of 1:00.67. Mary Kate Jackson had a good individual performance, finishing fourth in both the 800-meter dash and the 1,000-meter run.

The Leathernecks were lead by senior Sean Delahunt’s second-place finish in the shot put. His throw of 56-03.75 (17.16m) was just two inches off the first-place throw. Delahunt followed his performance in the shot put with a third place showing in the weight throw with a toss of 54-00.50 (16.47m), two feet further than fourth-place finisher, teammate Walt Willis.

Last Weekend’s Results

Junior college transfer ChrisDell Harris led the way for Western at the University of Wisconsin’s Elite Invitational with two first-place finishes. She tied the indoor school record while taking first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.66 seconds. It was her third straight first-place finish in the 60-meter dash. Harris’ second first-place finish came in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line with a time of 25.52 seconds.

On the men’s side, Delahunt took home first at the Elite Invitational in the shot put with a throw of 55-00.00 (16.76m), over two-feet further than the nearest competitor. Freshman Andy Ryan took seventh in the pole vault, but broke his own school indoor record that he originally set at the Purdue Invitational, with a vault of 16-01.25 (4.91m).

The indoor track and field teams head to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the University of Notre Dame’s Meyo Invitational held Friday through Saturday, February 8-9.
