MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois University will
celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) Saturday, February
2 with a special event offering reduced admission and a meet-and-greet
opportunity with Western Athletics teams’ female student-athletes and
coaches prior to the Westerwinds 4:30 p.m. basketball game vs. Southern
Utah.

Western will also honor the national day, Wednesday, February 6, by offering two information booths on campus about girls in sports.

The public is invited to join Western students, faculty, staff and alumni
in meeting female student-athletes and coaches from at 3:30 p.m.
Saturday in Western Hall’s East Arena. Girls in third through eighth
grades will be admitted to the game free of charge, and up to two
adults accompanying each girl may purchase tickets at a discounted rate
of $5 each.

Women players and coaches also will be recognized at halftime, along
with volunteers from Campus Recreation, the Women’s Center, and members
of student organizations from the departments of kinesiology and
recreation, park and tourism administration (RPTA), who will provide
resources and information about the importance of fitness, exercise and
sports.

The WIU Women’s Center also will commemorate NGWSD by providing
information and resource materials about girls and women in sports from
11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, February 6 at tables in the Student Recreation
Center and in the University Union Concourse.

NGWSD was established in 1986 to celebrate the achievements of girls
and women in sports and to honor Flo Hyman, a member of the 1984
Olympic silver medal volleyball team who died suddenly while competing
in Japan in 1986. The day also serves to recognize the positive
influence of sports participation and the continuing struggle for
equality and access for women in sports. The theme for NGWSD 2008 is
“All In!”

Western’s NGWSD celebration is sponsored by the Women’s Center,
Intercollegiate Athletics, Campus Recreation and the departments of
kinesiology and recreation, park and tourism administration, in
collaboration with the Girl Scouts of Central Illinois.
