March 19, 2008 on 8:25 pm | In Athletics |CEDAR FALLS, Iowa- Junior ChrisDell Harris won the 60-meter dash for the fourth time in as many weeks as the men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed at the UNI Invitational held at the UNI Dome.
“We had some good performances today,” stated Western Illinois head coach Mike Stevenson. “However, a lot of people were flat and the meet wasn’t exactly what I was looking for.”
Harris (Wichita, Kan./West/Brown County CC) has now captured four straight 60-meter dash titles, taking first at the Purdue, Iowa, and Wisconsin prior to this weekend’s meet at Northern Iowa where she took first with a time of 7.66 seconds. Harris followed her first-place performance in the 60-meter dash with a sixth-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.66 seconds.
“ChrisDell has been doing a wonderful job for us so far this year,” said Stevenson. “It is already very evident that she is someone that we can count on to come through and perform.”
Other strong showings for the Westerwinds include freshman Nichole Manning (Kansas City, Mo./Winnetonka) finishing in a tie for second in the pole vault with a vault of 11-03.75 (3.45m), tying a personal best. Senior Amy Zaffino (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) also finished second in the weight throw after a throw of 55-02.75 (16.83m). Senior Mary Scott (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour) finished in fifth-place in the 1,000-meter run, setting a personal best time of 3:08.37.
The Leathernecks received strong showings from their distance runners as sophomore Eric Anerino (Naperville, Ill./North) and junior Jared Schmidt (Liberty, Ill./Liberty) each took third in their events.
Anerino finished third in the mile run with a time of 4:21.24, eight seconds ahead of fourth-place finisher, junior teammate Luke Miller (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton). Schmidt took third in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:34.54. Anerino took sixth in the same event, crossing the line with a time of 2:38.68.
Western’s distance runners also performed well in the 3,000-meter run as junior Jason Henderkott (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf), sophomore Derek Gibb (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington), freshman Michael McGraw (Knoxville, Ill./Knoxville), and senior Jared Rothlauf (Fort Madison, Iowa/Fort Madison) took fourth, seventh, 10th, and 11th, respectively.
“Our distance runners had some very good outings today,” Stevenson stated. “Jason Henderkott was solid today with a big personal best. It was also nice to see Derek Gibb record a personal best after losing his shoe during the race. He kept working hard and ran a great race.”
Freshman Andy Ryan (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows) finished in fifth-place in the pole vault with a vault of 15-07.00 (4.75m). Senior Sean Delahunt (Pekin, Ill./Pekin Community) also took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 54-05.25 (16.59m).
The men and women’s indoor track and field teams continue their season Friday and Saturday, February 8-9, at the University of Notre Dame’s Meyo Invitational.
