Leathernecks picked fourth in The Summit League Poll

ELMHURST, Ill. - The Western Illinois men’s golf team has been selected to finish fourth in The Summit League, despite collecting two first place votes.

Western looks to capture its third straight conference title and fourth in five years under the guidance of reigning coach of the year Mel Blasi. The fall season saw transfer Jared Steger lead Western with a 74.4 stroke average. Fellow transfer Kyle Peterman was not far behind, carrying a 74.9 stroke average. Brian Scott and Jason Woll led the returners with averages of 76.1 and 76.8 respectively. The fall saw the Leathernecks meet up with Summit League member IUPUI at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course for match play which Western won 25-5.

UMKC and Oral Roberts tied for first place in the poll with 68 points each. UMKC received seven of the possible 10 first place votes. Southern Utah had one first place vote and was picked third with 64 points. Western collected 61 points in the poll along with its two first place votes. Newcomers South Dakota State and North Dakota State were picked fifth and sixth, with 47 and 40 points respectively. IUPUI (37), IPFW (29), Oakland (27) and Centenary (9) rounded out the poll.

The spring season officially kicks off for Western with a trip to San Diego, Calif., for the Drake University Invitational February 16-19. March 29-30 the Leathernecks travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Hoosier Invitational, where the field will feature league members IPFW and IUPUI. Western hosts the Beu/Mussatto Invitational April 4-5, which features Summit League members IUPUI, Oakland and South Dakota State. The final tune up for Western before the league tournament comes at the University of Illinois April 12-13.

The Summit League Championship is hosted by Western at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course. All Summit League teams will be in action in Macomb, Ill., April 20-22, with a trip to the NCAA Tournament at stake.
