Indoor track and field teams head to South Bend

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams head to the University of Notre Dame to compete in the Meyo Invitational, Friday-Saturday, February 8-9, held in the Notre Dame Loftus Sports Center.

The two-day meet is scheduled to start Friday, February 8, at 5:30 p.m. Action will resume on Saturday, February 10, with running events set to start at 9:30 a.m.

This is Western’s first trip to South Bend since they appeared at the Notre Dame Invitational, February 21, 1993.

Around the Conference
Two Leathernecks and one Westerwind currently own the top performance in The Summit League in their respective events. Senior Sean Delahunt (Pekin, Ill./Community) holds the top performance in the shot put with his throw of 17.49m at the EIU Early Bird. Delahunt also holds the second best league performance in the weight throw (16.99m).

Freshman Andrew Ryan (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows) joins Delahunt on the league’s top performance list in the pole vault with a mark of 4.91m at the Elite Invitational.

Senior Amy Zaffino (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) is the lone Westerwind on the women’s top performance list. Her throw of 16.95m in the weight throw, a personal best, is a foot further than the nearest competitor.

Harris Looks to Extend Streak
Junior ChrisDell Harris (Wichita, Kan./West/Barton County CC) looks to extend her streak of first-place finishes in the 60-meter dash to five this weekend at Notre Dame. The junior college transfer has won the sprint event at Purdue, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Northern Iowa consecutively.

School Records
With his vault of 16-01.25 (4.91m) at the University of Wisconsin’s Elite Invitational, January 26, Ryan broke his own school indoor record of 15-07.00 (4.75m) that he originally set at the Purdue Invitational, January 12.

Harris has posted a time of 7.66 seconds in her last two 60-meter dash events at Wisconsin (January 26) and Northern Iowa (February 2). The time tied Roshawn Brooks’ indoor record from 1987.

Western continues its season at the Iowa State Invitational, Friday and Saturday, February 15-16, held at the Lied Recreational Center.
