Harris breaks school indoor record at Meyo Invitational

SOUTH
BEND
, Ind.-
Junior ChrisDell Harris broke the school’s indoor record for the 60-meter
dash as the Western Illinois men’s and women’s
indoor track and field teams competed at the University of Notre Dame’s Meyo
Invitational.

It was a pretty solid meet for us overall,” stated Western Illinois head coach Mike Stevenson. “There were a
lot of very good athletes and a lot of good teams at this meet. It was
definitely the toughest field we’ve seen this year.”

Harris (Wichita, Kan./West/Barton
County CC) had her streak of four consecutive
first-place finishes in the 60-meter dash come to an end, but still had a
strong showing, finishing ninth with a time of 7.63 seconds, breaking the
school’s indoor record that she previously co-owned with Roshawn Brooks (1987).

Harris also had a strong performance in the 200-meter dash,
finishing 13th with a time of 24.93 seconds.

“ChrisDell has been working really hard this year,” said
Stevenson. “She started so late so she is still building. Most people hit their
peak at this time of the year because it’s a very competitive part of the
season. She’s still building and performing very well.”

Senior Sean Delahunt (Pekin,
Ill.
/Community) also posted a
top-10 finish, taking fifth place in the shot put with a throw of 54-07.50 (16.65m).
Delahunt was just a foot off of beating Purdue’s Billy Hardcastle for fourth
place.

“Sean is a great leader and a tougher competitor,” Stevenson
stated. “He’s not extremely happy with his results but he is still having good
finishes. He still wants to fine tune some technical things in order to hit the
marks that he knows he is capable of hitting.”

Western received other strong showings from sophomore Nikki
Klier (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs)
and senior Amy Zaffino (Shorewood,
Ill.
/Minooka). Klier finished 13th
in the 300-meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 41.10 seconds. Zaffino
also finished in 13th place, in the weight throw, with a throw of 53-06.50
(16.32m).

The indoor track and field teams continue their season
Saturday, February 16, at the Iowa State Invitational. Continue reading Harris breaks school indoor record at Meyo Invitational…
