Indoor track and field teams to compete at Iowa State Classic

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams will compete with over 90 teams from all over the country in the Iowa State Classic, Friday and Saturday, February 15-16.

Friday’s events will kick off at 1:30 p.m. with the women’s weight throw. Saturday will begin with the women’s 3,000-meter run at 9:25 a.m. All events will be held in the Lied Recreational Facility.

Last Year’s Results
Senior Sean Delahunt (Pekin, Ill./Pekin Community) was the highlight at last year’s Iowa State Classic as he hit a NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the shot put with a throw of 58-05.75 (17.82m), finishing second in the process. Delahunt also took 28th-place in the weight throw with a toss of 53-06.50 (16.32m).

Sophomore Eric Anerino also had a strong performance for the Leathernecks at last year’s ISU Classic, running a personal best 4:16.31, finishing in 26th-place in the mile run.

The Westerwinds were led by senior Katie Pickford (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) who set a school indoor record in the pole vault, taking second with a vault of 12-07.50 (3.85m). Junior Faith Chew (Rockford, Ill./Christian Life) finished 10th in the same event with a personal best vault of 11-07.75 (3.55m).

Another personal best at last year’s ISU Classic came from then-freshman Nikki Klier (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) in the 400-meter dash. Klier finished in 16th-place, crossing the finish line with a time of 56.52.

New Record Holder
Junior ChrisDell Harris (Wichita, Kan./West/Barton County CC) broke the school’s indoor record for the 60-meter dash at last weekend’s Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame. The Barton County Community College transfer took ninth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.63 seconds. Roshawn Brooks previously held the previous record of 7.66 seconds, set in 1987.

Harris becomes the second athlete from the 2007-08 squad to break a school indoor record. Freshman Andy Ryan (Rolling Meadows, Ill/Rolling Meadows) broke the school’s indoor record in the pole vault with a vault of 16-01.25 (4.91m) at Wisconsin’s Elite Invitational.

Around the Conference

Western currently has three athletes that hold the top performances in their respective events in The Summit League. Delahunt holds the top mark in the shot put with his throw of 57-04.75 (17.49m) at the EIU Early Bird. Ryan’s school record in the pole vault is also good for the top performance in the conference. Senior Amy Zaffino (Shorewood, Ill./Minooka) is the only Westerwind to hold a top performance, as she holds the top spot in the weight throw with her throw of 55-07.50 (16.95m) at the Elite Invitational.
