Western Illinois drops two to Drake and Iowa at the Metrodome Tournament
April 9, 2008 on 9:20 pm | In Athletics |MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - After falling 6-1 to Drake in game one, Nikki Marinec and Samantha Valentine each went 1-for-2 with a double in the nightcap against Iowa as Western Illinois suffered their second loss of the day, 2-0.
In the first inning of game one Rachael Heagney was at the plate with Julie DePolo at third and Marinec on second, when Drake’s Brynne Dordel threw a wild pitch that allowed DePolo to score.
The Bulldogs (1-0) took an immediate 2-1 lead in the following inning off a walk and a pair of singles. Drake’s Kelsey Kahler hit a three-run home run with one out on the board, which took the lead to 5-1. A ground-rule double by Susan Slycord allowed a final run to score and closed out the inning with Drake leading 6-1.
Western Illinois pitcher Courtney Jacobson held the Bulldogs for the final 5.2 innings of the game with three strikeouts, four hits and one run. Lori Pankratz suffered her first loss of the season in 1.1 innings of work, while Drake’s Dordel was credited with the win.
In the nightcap, the Westerwinds (0-4) fell 2-0 to Iowa, with Western Illinois pitcher Kamren Ferguson striking out six batters. Ferguson suffered her second loss of the season.
After three scoreless innings, Iowa’s Colleen McGlaughlin singled and advanced to second on the throw. Pinch runner Callie Adreon came in for McGlaughlin and scored on an Erin Riemersma single to put the Hawkeyes (1-0) on the board 1-0.
In the top of the fifth, a rundown between first and second bases allowed the runner on third base to score the final run of the game.
Western Illinois will close out the Metrodome Tournament, Saturday, February 17 with a 1 p.m. game against Arkansas.
