STERLING, Ill.- Junior
David Roscoe took first place in the weight throw as the Western Illinois men’s
and women’s indoor track and field teams competed in day one of The Summit
League Championships at Westwood Sports and Expo Center.

The Leathernecks finished the first day of competition in
third place with a score of 25.5 total points. North Dakota State
is leading the men’s team results with 77 total points.

The Westerwinds tallied 23 points on day one to be
positioned in fifth place. Southern Utah’s 51.5 points puts it in first place
after Friday’s events, right ahead of South Dakota State
with 51 points.

“Things went pretty good today,” said Western
Illinois
head coach Mike Stevenson. “I don’t think we had all of
the bodies that we need but things are going in a good direction. We had a lot
kids record personal bests and you can’t argue with that.”

Roscoe (Glenview,
Ill./Glenbrook South) entered the conference championship with the sixth best
performance in The Summit League. Roscoe threw a personal best with a throw of
55-06.50 (16.93m) to capture his first conference championship in his career.

“I’m at a loss of words,” said Roscoe. “I’ve worked really
hard over the season and I’m just happy that it all paid off.”

“It was awesome to see David take first,” stated Stevenson.
“He’s a walk-on in the program who shows up everyday and gives you everything
he’s got. He’s a good example of kids we want to get at Western. He does
exactly what we want him to do, doesn’t complain, and then throws big when he
needs to.”

Senior Amy Zaffino (Shorewood,
Ill.
/Minooka) took second in the
women’s weight throw with a personal best throw of 56-05.75 (17.21m). Also
taking second for the Westerwinds was junior ChrisDell Harris (Wichita,
Kan./West/Barton County
CC
), who took second in
the long jump with a personal best jump 18-10.00 (5.74). Harris also enters
tomorrow’s 60-meter dash finals with the top seed after tying her own school
indoor record of 7.62 seconds in the prelims, and posting a time of 7.67
seconds in the semi-finals.

The women’s distance medley relay team of senior Mary Scott
(Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour), freshman Julie Dietsch (Rock
Island
, Ill./Rock
Island
), freshman Josi Parker (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet-Seymour), and

Academy) finished in third place with a time of 12:36.64.
