Steger finishes seventh at Pinehurst Intercollegiate

PINEHURST, N.C. - Junior Jared Steger finished with a share of seventh place, leading the Western Illinois men’s golf team at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate.

Steger sat in 26th after the first day of competition. After a second round score of 73, he climbed up 13 spots into a tie for 13th. The final round proved to be the most successful one for the Bannockburn, Ill., native, who fired a 71 to climb into the top-10 and finish in a tie for seventh place.

In a strong field of competition with the likes of Indiana, the Leathernecks Kyle Peterman finished with a 236 (82-79-75). Not far behind Peterman were Ryan Franks who carded a 239 (81-82-76) and Jason Woll who recorded a 241 (82-74-85). Rounding out the individual scoring for Western was Austin Lambert, registering a 254 (83-87-84).

The Leathernecks finished in 17th place, with a combined score of 936 (322-308-306). Indiana claimed the team title with a one-over par, finishing 24 strokes ahead of second place Eastern Kentucky. Seth Brandon of Indiana took home the individual title with an even par 216 for the tournament.

The Leathernecks meet up with Indiana again when they travels to Bloomington, Ind., for the Hoosier Invitational, March 29-30.
