Westerwinds split weekend matches

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois women’s tennis team bounced back from a 4-3 loss to Southeast Missouri, Saturday, March 29, with a 7-0 defeat of Upper Iowa today at Brophy Courts.

The Westerwinds (5-9) opened the weekend up with a 4-3 loss at the hands of the Redhawks (5-8). The match was determined by the doubles point, which Southeast Missouri took two out the three doubles matches by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Sophomores Yana Meinert (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Joliet Township) and Ashley Clark (Waseca, Minn./Waseca/UW-Milwaukee) won at No. 3 doubles, defeating Elise Nattier and Taylor Orahood, 8-4, for their eighth win of the spring.

Western split the six singles matches, but it wasn’t enough as it needed to win four of the six matches after losing the doubles point. Junior Kim Lennartsson (Kungsbacka, Sweden/Katrine Lund Gymnasium/Southern Mississippi) won at the No. 2 singles spot, defeating Drew Kristal, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Meinert added a singles win to her doubles victory after beating Nattier, 6-1, 7-5. Sophomore Courtney Brooks (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) gave the Westerwinds their third singles win after sweeping Orahood, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.

On Sunday, Western bounced back with a 7-0 victory over Upper Iowa (5-7). Clark and Meinert won at No. 2 doubles (8-3), beating Mallory Cox and Erin Kelley, to move their doubles record to 9-6 on the Spring season. The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Amanda Griffin (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay/Fresno State) and freshman Kate Kennedy (Pekin, Ill./Community) and the No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Stephanie Baumer (Troy, Ill./Triad) and Brooks each earned doubles victories over the Peacocks.

In singles play, Meinert won her third match in a row, defeating Kelley, 6-2, 6-3. Baumer added a singles win, sweeping Faith Atherton, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles. The Westerwinds also received singles victories from Griffin (No. 1, 6-0, 6-2), Clark (No. 2, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (7)), junior Zi Wang (Hebei Province, China/Wanganui City College/Drake) (No. 3, 6-1, 6-1) and Kennedy (No. 4, 6-0, 6-1).

Western returns to play Saturday, April 5, when it hosts Chicago State and McKendree at Brophy Courts.
