Westerwinds suffer 9-8 mid-week loss to Augustana

MACOMB, Ill. - Samantha Valentine and Michelle Prieto each went 3-for-4 with a combined four RBIs as Western Illinois fell, 9-8 to Augustana College, Wednesday.

The Vikings (11-7) scored two runs in the first inning off a pair of home runs by Karlee Quartisch and Natalie Glunz. The Westerwinds (3-17) answered back in the bottom half of the inning as Julie DePolo stole home on a double steal with Valentine taking second to score the first run for Western Illinois. Nikki Marinec homered to left field scoring Valentine and giving Western a 3-2 lead.

Augustana’s Jackie Gill singled up the middle to score Gianna Leonetti from second base. Quartisch hit a two-run double with two outs to take the lead 5-3 before a fly out to right field ended the inning.

Colleen Biebel walked to lead off the second inning for Western. She stole second and advanced to third as the second baseman recovered the ball. With two outs and Biebel at third, Prieto singled toward first base to score Biebel. Prieto stole second and Julie DePolo walked as Valentine doubled to center field and score the two runners. Western Illinois ended the inning with a 6-5 lead over Augustana.

The Westerwinds held the Vikings scoreless in the top of the third and extended their lead to two when Biebel scored for the second time in the game.

An RBI single and a three-run home run by Brittany Snoreck gave Augustana a four run push in the top of the fourth inning to take a final lead, 9-7.

Western Illinois made an attempt to catch the Vikings with a final run in the sixth inning, but it wasn’t enough as Augustana defeated Western, 9-8

Pitcher Jordan Huff recorded the win in five innings of work, while Biebel suffered the loss in 5.1 innings.

The Western Illinois softball team will face conference-rival North Dakota State in a three-game series, starting with a noon doubleheader, March 5.
