July 6, 2008 on 10:05 pm | In Athletics | No Comments
Kelsey Lee can thank her Ipod and hip-hop artist Rick Ross for helping her win the first all-conference honors of her four-year gymnastics career at NC State. Had it not been for the tiny device, playing Ross' songs “Push It” and “I'm Bad” from his Port of Miami album, Lee might not have calmed her nerves to complete her most productive season with the Wolfpack. Lee admits that she is a tightly wound bundle of nerves before every competition. “I'm a nervous kid,” she said. “I get especially nervous being in front of large crowds like we have had at times this year. I get so worked up because I don't want to let my teammates or myself down. I have very high expectations.

The Leathernecks (7-14, 1-0 The Summit League) struggled early on to figure out the Golden Grizzlies’ (2-12, 0-1 The Summit League) starter Mike Takashima. Western took advantage of a couple miscues in the bottom of the sixth to grab the lead. Drew Laidig and Cooper Stewart drew back-to-back one-out walks. Laidig stole third, allowing Stewart to move up 90-feet as well. A pass ball tied the game at 1-1. With Stewart on third, T.J. TIM PEELER; Offensive Line Gets a Dose of Defense
July 4, 2008 on 8:56 pm | In Athletics | No Comments
One of the things that NC State football coach Tom O'Brien determined the Wolfpack needed after his first season with the Wolfpack was a more dominant offensive line. This spring, he's experimenting with a way to do that, with the help of a couple of veteran defensive linemen. “We have to be much better up front on the offensive line,” O'Brien said at the opening of spring practice two weeks ago. “It is imperative that we can get guys who can be physical players up front.” To do that, O'Brien asked junior Ted Larsen and senior John Bedics to make the move across the line of scrimmage.

Strong pitching leads to Leathernecks' 5-0 victory over Robert Morris
July 4, 2008 on 8:06 pm | In Athletics | No CommentsMACOMB, Ill. - Six pitchers saw time on the mound to combine for a 5-0 shut out as the Western Illinois baseball team defeated Robert Morris College, Wednesday afternoon at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
Frank Zenisek picked up his first win of the season as he was the only pitcher to throw more than one inning for the Leathernecks (6-14).
The offense got things going with two runs in the first and third innings off of the Eagles’ (12-7) starter Rob Krooswyk. Brett Pendell roped a triple to center field in the first and came home on a Kenny Price sac fly. Drew Laidig belted his second home run of the season with two outs. The heart of the lineup stayed productive in the third as Pendell led off with a single and was followed by Price with a double. Picking up his second RBI in as many at-bats was Laidig on a sac fly to right. T.J. Kistner’s second hit of the game brought in Price for the 4-0 lead after three.
